An agricultural exporter asked us: “What is the maximum time avocados can remain in excellent condition in a refrigerated container?”
Before answering, we requested the shipment’s dry matter percentage, which was reported as 26%. Based on this, we estimated a transit life of 40 days under normal conditions using Cold Wind System technology. The exporter asked for remote assistance, as the App was still in development at the time. We guided them by phone.
Weeks later, we were informed the shipment arrived in perfect condition after 45 days of transit. Adding six more days for harvesting and fruit preparation, the total preservation time was 51 days.
This case is remarkable because the large ship transporting the cargo to Japan lacked port space for unloading, diverting to Korea before returning to Yokohama on a smaller vessel. Despite the exporter’s and client’s anxiety, visualizing potential losses, the avocados arrived in perfect condition for sale.
